They've always done that. Same with their anime industry. But that doesn't mean they always should. It's very narrow and antiquated way of thinking in my opinion. But at the end of the day, it's their choice if they want to remain the way they are.They tried this with the first NieR game. In case you aren't aware - Yoko Taro, the game director for the NieR games talks about how for the first one they made two separate versions, NieR: Replicant which was Cat Jason Voorhees I Hate People Shirt released in Japan and had a teenage looking, typical JRPG protagonist. In the West, NieR: Gestalt was released where the main character had a completely different design and was a middle-aged, burly man. Yoko Taro mentions how the game didn't sell well and they gave up on the idea of catering to a Western audience and this was reinforced when NieR: Automata sold and was received well in the West when the game was basically only marketed for a Japanese audience.
